Competition time!
Dance school, The Place, where we went to watch the dance we helped create, have set a poetry competition with the prize of a family ticket to a day’s extravaganza there! All you have to do is write a poem about dance. It can be about watching or dancing… It’s up to you.
On the Family Day (July 22nd) a robot will write out the winning poem in sand… Weird but fantastic. Get writing!
Oh… and it doesn’t have to rhyme!

Dance
I was rehearsing for a show. We had to do flips and spins, but we weren’t very good. There were a few of my friends that were very good. I was one of the not so good ones. I was always exhausted. I kept on slipping when doing flips and when I was spinning I wasn’t very good. Then the teacher said that the show was tomorrow. I was surprised… I thought it was next week. So I told my parents that it was tomorrow. My parents told me that practice makes perfect so in the end I was really good!
Disco
The lights flashed on and a beat started up like a heart beat.
Suddenly the dancer appeared in an eighties outfit
with a matching gold belt
out of a cloud of purple smoke.
He seemed to slide across the floor with incredible ease.
As music flowed out of his mouth
like an invisible stream of sound.
The fans cheered and screamed
at the tops of their voices.
The dancer glided up to my part of the hall
He smelt of posh cologne and hair freshener.
He hi fived several of the audience and smiled.
Then the lights went off again…
I love this!
Red,yellow,green,blue
the glistening dancers leaped
like a net all over the stage.
Whirling turning,
like a shoal of fish
they are separate,
but like one body.
Flowing waves of limbs
tumbling mass of muscle and sinew.
Suddenly still.
Silence spreads around the stage.
Then a whirlpool of heads catches the light
and….
They all fall to the ground,
caught in the blinding colour
of the menacing waves.
The crowd erupt,
on their feet.
Their cheers making me deaf,
as I strain to see the faces
of the dancers,
standing now for their bow.
Once more like us.
Wow this is breathtaking Nina!
Dance
When you are dancing in a group
You don’t just do what you want to do
You need to plan the story
Do it in perfect time
Do it in the beat
Beat, rhythm, time
Some moves are peaceful
Gentle, powerful, groove
Some moves are crazy
Active, moving, crawling, jumping,
Some are slow
Emotional, imaginative, scary
Dance
Dance!
Feel your body move💃
Shake and groove
Watch the staring faces👩👶
From all different places
Ecstatic amazing
You’ll now you’ll be dazing✨✨
The people around
While you move to the sound🎶🎶
Spotlight’s on you🔊
You know what to do
The lights turn off📡
What’s happening now?
You take a bow
It’s the end of the show
Your time to go💨

Do the Harlem shake
Do the Gangnam Style
For goodness sake
Dance for a while
Do some hip-hop
Do some disco
Please don’t stop
Please don’t slow
Try the twist
Please don’t go
Otherwise you’ll miss
The flamenco
Move your feet
Wave your arms
Stage or street
You’ll do no harm
Do tap dancing
Do pop dancing
Do rock dancing
Don’t stop dancing!
We did a dance a very special dance
We had to:
Spin
Jump
Skip
Groove
And have fun!
We practiced and practiced our dance
Forever until we got the hang of it
We tried
and we took forever
We:
Span
Jumped
Skipped
And had fun!
We were tired so we had a break
We ate:
Chocolate
Sandwiches
Crisps
Jaffa cakes
And they were all so yummy!
After 5mins we went back to dancing and this time
We were on stage and showing our dance
And the audience loved it
We were happy we finished and will remember that
Day forever!
It was time.
Show time.
I felt so nervous.
But I wasn’t the only one.
There was Jessica and me,
And not to mention Bee.
Yet I still felt fear
“But don’t worry dear,”
But I didn’t hear.
I was so nervous.
I was in my own world
Blocked out from everything ever
Sound and noise.
I could only see.
So when I looked through the curtain
I shrunk back into my shell.
Like a tortoise
I could only creep.
No sharp movements
And no piercing sound.
But after minutes of nervousness
I came out of my horrible expressionless shell…
Ben
I could hear my heart pounding
I could feel millions of eyes piercing my soul
The spotlight was in my eyes
“It’s show time!”
I felt energy rushing through my body
I looked up and saw 100,000 people
I started my moves
Not normal moves
Dance moves
I felt things that I never felt before
I felt happy and sad
Excited and Terrified
I heard exclaims of delight
We finished
We ran up to the front and bowed
I could hear my heart pounding
I could feel millions of eyes piercing my soul
The spotlight was in my eyes
lol 🙂
Dance
Everyone loves dancing
Well, nearly everyone.
I’m rubbish at dancing
I get tired out easily when I’m dancing
It’s probably because I’m rubbish.
Dancing looks really weird in my opinion
Many people disagree for some reason
Maybe it’s because I only watch bad dancers.
Ok, I admit I’ve seen a few good dancers
But still….
Thinking about it, why do I hate dancing?
If your good at dancing, it’s not even that embarrassing
As they say: practice makes perfect.
Now that I’ve tried
I love dancing
Especially dancing to reggae.
If you haven’t tried dancing yet
You really have too.
Vic 😀 😀 😀
I think this is a bit too negative Victor, even though it turns around at the end. Maybe you could rewrite it thinking about the movement of the dancers?
I love de groove when I’m on de move
As you know me groove is mega smooth
Yu should book me one day
It would mek your son play
Or dance if dat’s what yu prefer to say
By de way,
My dancing club is underway.
De entry fee is: £2.00 per day
I love de groove when I’m on de move
Yu shouldn’t disapprove
If you do then I’ll improve
Dis rap, not the groove!
But dis isn’t the time or place
To chase all over space
For de perfect word that rhymes with ace
Or maybe even disgrace.
Put your word out to the world
I’m walking down the street when I hear some music coming from a park.
I look into the park where the music is coming from.
I see over the hedge a band of street dancers!!!
The music bouncing off the trees
their moves so co-ordinated they could be cyborgs
I feel like dance is a way of expressing yourself
And when I see street dancers I feel like they’re putting their word out to the world
Don’t care what other people think, they’re just putting their word out to the world.
I watch in awe at the dancers, and I listen to what the dancers are saying.
32 white dress dancers in your mouth, chewing on a piece of food, down it goes through your esophagus, just slightly more jumpy, with a wiggle it lands and a jiggle it enters, the lump of food gets surrounded by leaping acids, after leaving the stomach it drifts into the intestines, now even more jazzy, a long ride down a crazy slide, the piece of food is now jumping, leaping, wiggling and jiggling and, its dancing so gracefully, twirling and swirling everywhere. Now even hopping it couldn’t believe how confident it was until… Somebody came to the toilet and flushed.
Dance Poem
Hitler’s Canary
It was April 1940; the Germans had just invaded while I was fast asleep in King Henry V’s throne. King Henry V had obviously been dead for a long time, but I’ve seen my Uncle Max (who’s an actor like most of my family) play him many times. There had been a huge party that night, on the 9th of April. I remember all the actors performed a little scene and how everyone wept when mother did her piece from Hamlet. Poor Ophelia; so sad that she drowned herself. I remembered mother slightly sobbing as she bowed to the crowd.
Vic 😀
nice going vic good luck
CAN YOU HEAR ME? I–WANT–TO–TALK–TO–HARRY–POTTER!” Ron was yelling so loudly that Uncle Vernon jumped and held the receiver a foot away from his ear, staring at it with an expression of mingled fury and alarm. “WHO IS THIS?” he roared in the direction of the mouthpiece. “WHO ARE YOU?””RON–WEASLEY!” Ron bellowed back, as though he and Uncle Vernon were speaking from opposite ends of a football field. “I’M–A–FRIEND–OF–HARRY’S–FROM–SCHOOL –“Uncle Vernon’s small eyes swiveled around to Harry, who was rooted to the spot.
Goodnight Mister Tom
By Michelle Magorian
The small alcove stank of urine and vomit. A thin emaciated boy with matted hair and skin like parchment was tied to a length of copper piping. He held a small bundle in his arms. His scrawny limbs were covered with sores and bruises and he sat in his own excrement. He shrank at the light from the torch and made husky gagging noises. The warden reached out and touched him and he let out a frightened whimper. An empty baby’s bottle stood by his legs.
“You give me that baby son.” said the warden but the boy tightened himself up.
By The Nellster
I love that book so much Nell it’s really interesting and exciting and amazing!
Characters:Chrysaor, Percy, Annabeth, Frank, Hazel, Piper and Coach Hedge
”Fakes!” Chrysaor roared.”Shut up Percy Jackson.Your camp director is not here.He was recalled to Olympus. This common knowledge.”
”So you admit that Dionysus is our director!”Percy said.
”He was,”Chrysaor corrected.Everyone knows that.”
Percy gestured at the golden warrior like he’d just betrayed himself.”You see?We are all doomed. If you don’t believe me, let’s check the ice chest!”
Percy stormed over to the magical cooler. No on tried to stop him.He knocked open the lid and rummaged through the ice. There had to be one.Please.He was rewarded with a silver-and-red can of soda.He brandished it at a dolphin warriors as if spraying them with bug repellent.
”Behold!” Percy shouted. The god’s chosen beverage.Tremble before the horror of Diet Coke!”
The dolphin-men began to panic. They were on the edge of retreat.Percy could feel it.
The god will take your ship ,”Percy warned.”He will finish your transformation into dolphins, or make you insane or transform you into insane dolphins!Your only hope is to swim away now, quickly!”
Ridiculous!”Chrysaor’s voice turned shrill. He didn’t seem sure where to level his sword – at Percy or at his own crew.
”Save yourselves!”Percy warned.”It is too late for us!”
Then he gasped and pointed to the spot were Frank was hiding.”Oh no! Frank is turning into a crazy dolphin!”
Nothing happened.
”I said,” Percy repeated,”Frank is turning into a crazy dolphin!”
Frank stumbled out of nowhere, making a big show of grabbbing his throat.”Oh no,” he said like he was reading from a teleprompter”I’m turning into a crazy dolphin.”
He began to change, his nose elongating into a snout, his skin sleek and grey.
In confusion, Annabeth moved quickly to cut bonds on Hazel,Piper and Coach Hedge.
Characters:Leo, Percy, Annabeth and Coach Hedge
The others nodded in agreement, but Percy noticed several of them glancing at Annabeth. Another thing no one wanted to say :Annabeth would be on a different schedule. She might be back at three, or much later, or never. But she would be on her own, searching for the Athena Partheons.
Coach Hedge grunted.”That’ll give me time to eat the coconuts -I mean dig the coconuts out of our hull.Percy, Annabeth. . . I don’t like you two going off on your own.Just remember:behave. If i hear any funny business, I will ground you until the Styx freezes over.”
The idea of getting grounded when they were about to risk their lives was so ridiculous Percy couldn’t help smiling.
”We’ll be back soon,” he promised. He looked around at his friends, trying not to think like this was the last time they’d ever be together.”Good luck, everyone.”
Leo lowered the gangplank, and Percy and Annabeth were first off the ship…
